Following John Maxwell on Leadership

Posted on March 25, 2010

Leadership ability determines a person’s effectiveness. If you don’t learn how to lead effectively, there will be a limit to your success. Your organization can not grow beyond the “lid of your leadership”.

Learn how to lead if you want to be affective in life…that is the law of the lid.

The Law of Influence – the true measure of leadership is influence. It is not a title or position that influences people it is relationships. Just look to Mother Teresa as an example – though she had no impressive title or position, there is no doubt about the influence she has had. Like her, many of our greatest leaders did not have high positions but they were highly influential.

“Leadership is a process. Leadership develops daily not in a day”. You can’t become a great leader simply by watching someone else lead. It is a process that takes time, it won’t happen overnight. It takes time to study, learn and develop your leadership style and skill set.

This is a great lesson for me to learn. I’m one of those people that wants to accomplish everything NOW! I don’t want to take the time to develop sometime. If I struggle with an area, I want to do it in private and have the outward appearance of having it all together. How much more effective will I be when I face my team with an attitude of “I am learning to be a better leader and as I do, I need your help to develop those skills”.

Learning Success from John Maxwell

Posted on March 18, 2010

I happen to be a huge John Maxwell fan. I have seen him speak live, read his books, listened to his cd’s, etc. For me, John Maxwell brings new insights every time I see, listen or read his work. In the next couple of posts, I plan to share some of the amazing John Maxwell teachings with you.

Successful people know their purpose in life. They truly know “why” they are here. It is stability for them – they hold steady through the storm.

They have an anchor that steadies them in any storm – it is confidence in the knowledge they know their purpose.

There are two great days in each person’s life: the day they were born and the day they discover “why”. Highly successful people have discovered the “why”.

John Maxwell’s theory of knowing your purpose really hit home for me. I have often heard it said “you need a strong enough ‘why’ to carry you through the difficult times”. As life moves forward, my “why” has changed. I have learned that my “why” will keep me moving forward.

Do you know your “why”? Is it strong enough to weather the storms? Just as I believe that all of us have greatness inside of us, I believe we need a strong “why” to achieve that greatness.

Dog Grooming Is Like Our Finances

Posted on March 8, 2010

Sassy before clip

Sassy after clip

It struck me as a bit ironic recently how much my dog needing to be groomed is so much like our finances. For weeks, I had been telling myself that poor Sassy deserved a trip to the groomer for a “clip”. Every day distractions would come along and there was never time for the groomer. Finally one day I felt so bad about how scraggly Sassy looked, I made time for the groomer.

It got me to thinking how we do the same thing with our finances. How often do we know we need to make some changes; however, we are so caught up with where we are now that we don’t do anything? How often would we feel some relief if we just took some baby steps to start “clipping” away at the old habits we know we need to change?

I’ve heard it said, small changes over time make a huge difference. I would encourage you today to start taking those small steps that will lead to a path of success. Rather than looking at the “whole” picture and feeling overwhelmed and yet knowing you need to make changes to be able to move forward. “Clip” one small thing, develop the habit and then move on to the next item to “clip”.

The Value of Financial Stability

Posted on February 26, 2010

Financial Stability is Security For Your Family

Financial Stability is Security For Your Family

Let me share a story with you that will help bring home the value of financial stability to your family.  About 10 years ago, both of my parents became hospitalized within days of each other.  Both of them were in critical care units.

Mom was able to come home first and little did we know, that was just the beginning of her medical journey.  Dad came home soon after.  Over the next several months, both parents would be in fights for their lives.

At that time, I had no idea that Long Term Care insurance would have significantly lessened the burden I was under. Not only was I trying to be the caregiver and struggling to balance their care with their hospital stays, I was working full-time (close to 60 hours a week).  I also did not have my financial blueprint in place so I had to continue to work to try to keep up with my parent’s medical bills along with the normal monthly bills. As a result, I had very little time to actually spend with my parents.

Mom went on to need several major surgeries. Because I did not have financial stability at that point, I had to work to pay their bills. The company I was working for would not give me the time off I needed so I was not able to be with her when she went into surgery. For hours at a time, I would not know if she had even survived the surgery.

Once Mom passed away, I realized how much time I had missed with her.  It was too late to get Long Term Care insurance for my Dad with his health issues, but I got very serious about putting a financial blueprint together so that I would have financial stability for my family.

About year and a half ago, my Dad’s health deteriorated and he was now in a fight for his life.  By this time, I had managed to have that financial stability I had not had when Mom was so ill.  This time, I was in a position to be with my Dad every step of the way.  I was able to focus on him and his needs rather than being focused on finances.

Financial stability allows you the peace of mind to focus on your family when they need you the most. So if I sound passionate about the value of financial stability, I am.

What Is Your Big 5?

Posted on January 22, 2010

KeriGee Semmelman, John Strelecky and Elliot Semmelman

Recently we had the opportunity to meet John Strelecky. This was a tremendous opportunity since I was so moved when I read his book, “Life Safari”. Let me say, I highly recommend this book.

In the book, John takes us on a journey to Africa to see his “Big 5 for Life”. I was captivated throughout the entire story. I felt like I was on the adventure with John as he went on his search.

You may be wondering, what is the “Big 5 for Life”? The “Big 5” are simply the 5 things that you want to “see”, “do” or “experience” in your life. Although your 5 items may change as life changes or as you accomplish challenges, we all have goals to reach for. For John, it was 5 animals he wanted to experience.

You may be wondering what this has to do with finances. I suggest, it has everything to do with finances. I think so many of us get caught up in financial issues that we forget to dream. A financial plan gives you the ability to get your financial house in order. Perhaps that is even one of your “Big 5”, to experience financial freedom.

Let us begin to dream again. What is your “Big 5 for Life”?

My Dogs Are Like A Budget

Posted on January 17, 2010

Do you have dogs? Do they like to dig? Mine sure do!!

This week I went out in the yard and it looked like a Civil War re-enactment had taken place. There were holes everywhere. Some of the holes looked like the dogs where digging to the other side of the world.

It seemed logical to fill the holes back in. As I tried to feel the holes in, it became very apparent there was not enough dirt. How can that be? If there had been enough dirt before the holes, why isn’t there enough dirt to fill the holes back in now?

It suddenly occurred to me, the holes in the dirt are similar to the holes in the budget. Without a financial plan, we struggle to fill the holes in the budget and there is never enough. What’s creating the holes in your budget? Do you have a financial plan to fill those holes?

New Year’s Resolution 2010

Posted on December 30, 2009

Happy New Year's to All!!!

Happy New Year's to All!!!

As we look forward to new beginnings and setting New Year’s resolutions for 2010; may I suggest that we really think seriously about the changes we want in our lives.  Statistically, 83% of all New Year’s resolutions will be broken within 60 days of the new year. Let 2010 be the year that we set resolutions that can truly impact our lives.

May I say, it is never too late to get our finances in order. It is never too late to do things differently; to make a difference in our financial situation. Anyone can better their financial situation with an open mind to learn. Make 2010 the year that we take the opportunity to get the basic financial education to understand our finances.

Sit down with a financial coach and pencil out where you are now financially and where you want to go. A financial coach can show you what your options are. With financial education, we can change our financial habits to break the old cycle of debt.

May you realize all your goals and dreams for 2010. I look forward to taking the journey with you.
